The Belgian archives contain a tremendous amount of historical treasures, considerably more than the Dutch archives. Unfortunately, in my experience they often are already now less accessible than the Dutch and French archives.

In the same context, do not forget the problem of the ocntractual vs the permanent positions. At several places, like Royal Observatory of Belgium orSpace Aeronomy, the situation is highly bad. Indeed 80% ofthe scientifc personel is under defavorable contractual position. This is a also a major problem.

Affaiblir la mémoire, supprimer les possibilités d'accroche à l'imagination, appauvrir l'éventail des sens à donner à l'existence collective, c'est ouvrir la porte à une société utilitariste et autoritaire.

The Royal Library of Belgium has not had adequate funding for decades, regardless of the incalculable importance of its collections. The average American university library has a better and more up-to-date collection of secondary material: books and periodicals. Especially lamentable is the absence of an efficient department for making reproductions for scholars, which could be an important source of revenue. The library has an ideal central location in Brussels and ought to be redesigned as a major cultural landmark that would attract the best and brightest to visit if not live and work in Belgium.
Dit behoeft geen toelichting. Respect voor kunst en wetenschap is de essentie van elk beschaafde land.
