By signing this petition, we are requesting the ability to work with members of other classes on the French V Film Project. Though we understand that separating classes is intended to help students with their projects, we feel that for many reasons it would do more harm than good.

Though this is not just about being able to work with friends, we do believe that time management will be aided by having the option to work with people that we are close to and have collaborated with before. When we are able to choose friends and partners with whom we have previously worked on projects, we know that we are choosing people whose schedules align with our own. We understand that we cannot choose to work with friends with whom we would never have time to meet, as the would make completion of the project significantly more difficult. Should we be required to choose people only from within our own classes, we can certainly find people that we know and like, but we will likely not know as much about each others schedules and work habits. As such, the likelihood of creating teams that will be able to easily find times to meet and work together will be significantly diminished.

We certainly value and appreciate the ability to have time to work in class. However, the nature of this project demands significant work (filming, finding props/costumes, scouting locations, etc.) that cannot be done in a classroom setting. Once we arrive at a stage (editing) where it will be useful to have class time, work can easily be divided up, such that members can work individually in their own classes. We understand that working with other people will require us to make these divisions when it comes to in class work, and we accept this and are willing to make accommodations for it. If we do wish to have the entire group together in class, we can always just choose to form a group consisting entirely of students in our class.

Finally, the French Film project is a capstone to our study of French in Lexington. It is something that many of us have looked forward to for years, especially having attended past film festivals during our years at LHS. We want to make amazing films and have a lot of fun doing it. Having free choice of partners for our groups will ensure that everybody ends up working with people who they enjoy working with and will be extra motivated to do a good job, resulting in an amazing process and fantastic results!

Merci Beaucoup,
Les Étudiants de Français 5
