WNY School Psychologists and Educators Seek Partnership With
Buffalo Sabres in Promoting Mental Health and Wellness in School Children
INTRODUCTION:
Dear WNY School Psychologists and School Psychologist Supporters,
Due to recent school shootings, bullying, and violence in our schools, there is a renewed focus on childhood mental illness. As a result, WNY School Psychologists and the New York State Association of School Psychologists (NYASP) are looking to gain support in promoting awareness for childhood mental health illness by partnering with NHL teams/players.

WHY BRINGING ATTENTION TO MENTAL ILLNESS IN CHILDREN MATTERS:
5 FACTS ON CHILDHOOD MENTAL ILLNESS:
1. Nearly 1 in 5 school-age children suffer from a seriously debilitating mental disorder that greatly affects their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning in schools.
2. Approximately 60 - 90% of children do not receive help for mental health problems
3. It is estimated that 13% of youth ages 8 to 15 experience severe mental disorders in a given year and that percentage increases to 20% in youth ages 13 to 18 years of age.
4. The majority of children obtain mental health services in schools
5. Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year.

WHY ARE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS CRITICAL “PLAYERS” IN SCHOOL-WIDE MENTAL HEALTHREFORM AND PROMOTING MENTAL WELLNESS IN CHILDREN?
School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning evironments that strengthen connections between the home, school, and the community (NASP, N.D.) They assist children in succeeding in school by providing counseling, instruction, and mentoring for students suffering from social, emotional, behavioral, and academic problems (NASP, N.D.). Additionally, school psychologists promote wellness by reinforcing and teaching social skills, problem solving, anger management, self-regulation, and optimism in students through consulting with teachers, administrators, and parents (NASP, N.D.). To find out more about the diverse and expanding role of school psychologists, please visit the National Association of School Psychologists’ website below:http://www.nasponline.org/about_sp/whatis.aspx/
