Started by Ridge Street Neighborhood Association 11 years, 1 month ago

On July 6th, the Charlottesville City Council chose to defer voting on a Marriot Fairfield Inn hotel and residential development on the corner of Cherry and Ridge Street. As a resident and taxpayer of the City of Charlottesville, I am exercising my right to petition City Council.

I do not support a hotel.

A hotel on this gateway property does not serve residents of the surrounding neighborhood, does not complement the neighborhood’s historic or environmental assets, does not activate the street and has not been presented to residents in context to the city’s Strategic Investment Area plan.

Council addresses this project again at their next meeting: July 20th.

I recommend City Council defer to the Planning Commission recommendation and REJECT the use of a hotel on this property and continue community engagement driven by the Ridge Street Neighborhood Association and residents.

(If you or someone you know would prefer signing the paper petition or if you support the project as stands, please Email: [email protected])

The community does not need to pay the penalty of developing a property inappropriately. The Flats was approved for tax revenue. Let's not sell out another important corridor. One Faustian bargain is enough already.

I don't believe that a hotel in this location will spur local economic activity. If anything it will increase pressure to funnel more traffic through the Fifeville neighborhood while those who live here do so because of the human scale and pace of the neighborhood.

I asked city council months ago about this. Stating that I use to live on that corner years ago. Kristin Szakos said, to me, No. Mrs. Carey, there will be no hotel put up there now or in the future. We will have housing placed there before a hotel.

There is no consideration for the additional infrastructure & utilities required of a project this size, nor relief from the increased traffic at Elliot-Ridge (currently in critical condition and worse when the Southern Development housing on Elliot is completed). Impact studies required!

This is a key, historic plot at a strategic cross roads where two vibrant neighborhoods meet. It's a rare opportunity and we can do much better than a one-star motel, which will nudge the area in exactly the wrong direction.

We do not want or need another hotel chain to homogenize this historic neighborhood and undermine the family friendliness created by Tonsler Park in this corridor. Please also think about the chaos this would create on the already congested Cherry Avenue, especially during rush hour.

Condos is better than transient lodging coupled with the auto service result. By my count that's 3 Marriott properties in 8 blocks.

This is such a bad idea. Makes me wonder who is padding the boards pockets
