I think you are missing the point as to why alot of people do not want the fence. We are a small community and there are alot of longterm residents here who have used or attended the school themselves. Ask yourself why you moved here? Because Copa is a beautiful and safe place with alot of caring people who I know for one have the best interest of the kids. We do not want to lose that you may think it's not a big deal but to us who have been here for over 38 years it is. Todd and I have both grown up here and have seen it all. Locking up the kids is not the answer. And the fence will change the culture of the school. By putting up a fence we will lose a major part of what Copa is all about.
So many people come and go from the school at all times, are they going to get them to sign in everytime they come to drop off or pick up their kids? Or do we all wait at the gates like a jail waiting for them to be released. Locking the kids up will teach the kids a false sense of security. We need to as parents be vigilant in keeping an eye on the kids and what is happening in the community. I understand there are littlies involved but that is the responsibility of the school, that is a duty of care and if its means more teachers on playground duty then that should be discussed too. As for the kids being taught about stranger danger I believe more needs to be done at the school for example getting the police to come down and organizations that run these specialized programs, that will be way more affective than locking them up.
I understand that you are a mum with little ones, and you want to do everything you can to protect your kids, but as a parent we also have to trust that the school is protecting and teaching them correctly.
I have had 4 kids go through the school with one still attending. I do feel safe sending my child there and in my time living at Copa have never felt the need to lock the school up.
