Hey Bec! Not false and they still live here in Copa and have done so for around 17/18 years. However their child no longer attends our school. No apology needed as I think there have been lots of whispers and misinformation so hard to know. They are close friends of mine which is how I know and came to be involved with the P&C. The petitioners information is wrong, the school WILL be open to ALL children, parents and the whole community after hours - evenings, weekends and holidays. This is important as the school grounds are the only flat play space in Copa. The fence will go from after school care to the road. It will have a gate so people can still come up from the tennis courts for school drop off and pick up. This gate and the back gate will only be locked during school hours. The small minority is about 40 couples that have expressed an opinion to us. I am unsure how many more who haven't. We do not want to change the culture here, we love Copa, we are just concerned for all our children but most particularly the littlies who are most vulnerable. Stranger danger has been taught at the school a number of times both routinely and as a response to the incident last year and an attempt a couple of weeks ago on Copa Drive. There are teachers on playground duty and as of last year they are now wearing high vis jackets to be instantly recognisable to the children. Parents should already be entering via front gate during school hours and all parents need to sign in and get a bright pink visitors badge. Children have been taught to report to a teacher anyone who is not a teacher without a badge. This happens in most schools I think judging from my conversations with friends. If you have any questions or concerns please come to P&C on 11/03/14, we need to have parents correctly informed and involved, whatever their views. Our community is diverse and made up of lots of people with lots of different views but with one thing in common, we all love Copa and it's school. Thanks for reading this, sorry it's so long!

We live in copa and my eldest (3) learned to ride his scooter on the grounds. I hope you dont fence it off so other families can benefit from the flat areas for the kids to play and run. Cheers jane

Joanne you said it yourself: there are plenty of schools with your desired fences in the area. the positive record of copa speaks for itself.

I think a fence is needed on the side thats suggested near the tennis courts to deter strangers from entering the school during school hours. More open discussion needed for all. Please lets keep this civil and mature

copa is a treasure: kids parents teachers neighbours have taken spiritual ownership of our school and the adjacent parklands, there is NO need for a fence and never has been, leave it open to everyone who wants to use it

Bec, I am of the same understanding as you of that matter. Regardless of that, if someone inappropriate really wanted to get in or get to children, a fence is not going to stop them. I agree with the earlier post about educating our children in relation to those dangers. A fence around Copa School is ridiculous and will not get my support!

Please don't take this as a negative response Bec Learwood, i understand what your saying, but I am lead to believe that the incident you are referring to was in fact a false accusation and the person/s it involved have since left our community?
I could be wrong, in which I will apologise if need be.. But I strongly believe this to be the true of that matter.. :)

I do NOT want a fence.. And I believe the DET will not fund it as Copa is not deemed as a high risk vandalism area.

Unfortunately I don't think a lot of you are aware of the events of last year that have triggered the concerns of many parents of Copacabana. I strongly urge you to attend the P&C AGM on 11th March, so that you can perhaps fill in the gaps and see that this is not the concern of some "5 minute" locals. We would all like to allow our children as much freedom, and open space as is possible in our current social climate but certainly when our children are in the care of the school we should feel that they are safe.

Lived here my hole life and seen minority groups who have moved here and have no idea of the culture of Copacabana. The school has hardly ever been damaged over the years the tennis shed cops all the damage. Besides if they put a fence up that means you can't sneak past those fools that hand out panflets when you go to vote

A fence won't keep our kids safe but educating our kids about strangers will.Spend the cash that gets raised on awareness for the kids. Not a fence!!
