Tooting is an amazing community, with a richly diverse population from all socio economic backgrounds, religions and ethnic backgrounds. In October 2011, this diverse community united as they have never united behind a single cause in living memory since the second world war. They stood together behind one member of their community held in prison without charge for more than 7 years, Babar Ahmad. It started with one man, Babar's father appealing for the community to stand with him asking for Babar to be put on trial. Soon people who never used to know Babar before his arrest in August 2004, were standing outside the local shops spreading the information about his case and raising awareness. From all backgrounds, the people of Tooting, South London, and beyond united. Without expensive advertisement's, newspaper backing or any corporate support, this tiny community in Tooting gathered more than 140,000 signatures on a government petition site to demand that Babar Ahmad be put on trial in the UK. When finally the day came for Babar's case to be debated in parliament, the day thousands upon thousands of the residents of tooting had called for, Sadiq Khan, our esteemed MP was nowhere to be seen! Every other person awaiting similar extradition cases had their MPs present, highlighting their individual case. Yet for Babar Ahmad, the very man for who the petition was generated and signed, his MP was not. Despite also having Talha Ahsan, a second person in his constiuency on a similar extradition warrant, Sadiq Khan was absent. It was left to other members of parliament to discuss Babar's case. Where was our MP? this campaign was led by residents of Tooting, most of the signatures came from residents of Tooting. Why were we not represented, where was our MP? It is our understanding that despite two formal requests for an explanation no explanation for his absence has yet been provided? We the undersigned demand to a response to the following: 1. Sadiq Khan, where were you on the night of 5th December 2011? 2. Sadiq Khan why did you not represent your constituents and attend the debate on the 5th December 2011? 3. Sadiq Khan, what do you intend to do next to help end Babar Ahmad's and Talha Ahasan's ordeals?
