Petition For A Costco on The East Side Of Big Island

PLEASE BRING A COSTCO TO HILO. IT WOULD BE A GREAT SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY HERE AND WOULD ALSO BE A GREAT BUSINESS PROPOSITION.

South Hilo needs a Costco.

It would financially benefit the company and the residents of Hilo to have a Costco on the East side of the big island. The drive is tasking, costly and at times dangerous as well.

The east side of the big island is the fastest growing and the people here could use a Costco. It would benefit the company with more customers and sales.

This is so needed here. We have such a large and growing population who either can’t afford the gas, time or who are elderly and unable to cover that distance for their regular shopping.

The east side of the big island is the fastest growing and the people here could used a Costco, not only for the jobs, but for the cheaper prices. Make no sense to travel all the way to Kona for cheaper prices if it’s going to cost more in gas and time. There are so many accidents going to and from Kona that many won’t travel there even if it’s to go to Costco.

To Whom It May Concern, We, the undersigned residents and supporters of East Hawaiʻi Island, respectfully request that Costco Wholesale consider opening a new warehouse location in the Hilo or Keaʻau region. Currently, the only Costco on the island is located in Kailua-Kona, which requires a 2.5 +-hour drive each way for East Hawaiʻi residents. This long commute creates significant inconvenience, added fuel costs, and prevents many local families and businesses from fully benefiting from Costco’s services. The east side of the island is home to a large and growing population, including Hilo—the island’s largest town—and surrounding communities such as Keaʻau, Pāhoa, and Volcano. This region has a diverse population of working families, Kapuna, students, and small business owners who rely on bulk purchasing and affordable prices. Unfortunately, the geographic isolation has made access to Costco’s value and quality difficult. Furthermore, many East Hawaiʻi residents are forced to spend their grocery and household budgets at more expensive or limited retailers, or they simply go without. Not only does this hurt local households, but it also represents a lost opportunity for Costco in membership renewals, in-store purchases, and gas and pharmacy sales. How Costco Would Benefit: • Untapped Market Demand: The east side of Hawaiʻi Island represents tens of thousands of underserved residents who currently face barriers to shopping at Costco. Opening a location here would immediately tap into a loyal, high-volume customer base that is currently spending elsewhere out of necessity. • Increased Membership Growth: Many East Hawaiʻi residents delay or avoid membership renewals due to distance. A local warehouse would boost new signups and renewals, driving recurring revenue. • Reduced Logistics Costs: Costco already ships most of its merchandise through the Hilo port—the main port on the island. Opening a warehouse in Hilo or Keaʻau would cut overland freight

Please bring Costco to Hilo area or Keeau!!! Most of the big island population is in HPP anyways !!

Need it for locals and Hilo deserves it.

The drive to Kona is just too far! I would shop at Costco all the time if they had one on this side

It's crazy to think that people have to drive all the way to the west side to get to a Costco because it's more touristy. Hilo is the capital of Big Island and there's more people on the East Side. It definitely deserves to have a Costco

Saddle Road is so dangerous to drive with many reckless drivers, along with all the goats. I have PTSD from a car accident while returning from my Costco shopping trip for my business. I haaaaaate driving Saddle, yet am forced to multiple times per month for my business. Please please consider building a Costco on the Hilo side.

We need a coSTCo on the east side of Hawaii. I won’t shop Target or Walmart!

The $50 in gas eats up almost our entire savings. It’s crazy that they have not built a Costco on the Hilo side!

Costco typically uses population metrics to decide where to expand, so this alone should make Hilo a strong candidate. Port Location & Logistics: Hilo has the main shipping port, meaning all goods arrive in Hilo first before being transported to Kona. A Costco in Hilo would reduce trucking costs, streamline distribution, and lower consumer prices. Growing Demand: The population of Puna and South Hilo, in particular, has grown rapidly, meaning the need for bulk shopping options is stronger than ever. Oahu’s Multi-Costco Model: Oahu has multiple Costco locations despite being smaller in land area than the Big Island. If demand justifies multiple stores on Oahu, it should certainly justify at least one in Hilo.
