Just saw this forum and will add my 2 cents. A friend of mine who has contacts with representatives of Costco that had initially looked into opening a store on the east side of the island said that Costco officials where stymied and encountered significant roadblocks in trying to secure the appropriate land parcels. If it wasn't for those difficulties, you would have had a store there by now. I can't mention the details but it wasn't for lack of trying or because Costco did not want a store on that side. Over in Kona, I have noticed how packed and crowded the store and parking becomes early in the day as it opens and stays that way throughout the day. It literally is traffic gridlock especially with the gas facilities. It's gotten to the point where you have to strategically plan your timing on when to visit the store in kona. One more point is that a significant amount of the shoppers are visitors and we get our share of affluent members. In my opinion, there is definitely room and demand for 2 stores on our island. For the eastsiders, you need to consider the impact a costco would have on your local businesses in terms of competition. Some would end up losing market share and possibly closing. In other words there will be trade offs. Maybe if more residents continue to petition Costco Headquarters they may look into and give it another try.

I realy like Costco.A Costco would be so great to have on the Hilo side! I do almost all my shopping at Costco. We realy need Costco store in Hilo!

A Costco would be so great to have on the Hilo side! I do almost all my shopping at Costco. Such great products at great prices!

A costco store is VERY NEEDED on the EAST SIDE (Hilo) of Hawaii Island. I make a monthly trip to the Kona store and spend well over $500.00 per trip. From the info I heard, 60% of the shoppers at the Kona Costco come over from the East (Hilo) side.

I refuse to drive 100 miles to shop at Costco, although I used to be a weekly shopper in California 10 years ago.

Considering the large number of people on the East side of the Big Island, I would think it would be profitable to have a Costco there. I'm thinking in the area of Keaau where Hwy 130 and 11 meet.

We need a Costco here on the east side. Kona is just too far to drive just to go to Costco.
