West Melbourne Against Brevard County School Board Rezoning
The residents of the City of West Melbourne and affected unincorporated areas under the cognizance of Brevard County submit this petition to the Brevard County School Board in support of Resolution No. 2017-26 submitted to The Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Desmond Blackburn and each member of the Brevard County School Board dated 19 September 2017. Resolution No. 2017-26 states:
“A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA, OPPOSES ANY BREVARD PUBLIC SCHOOLS REDISTRICTING THAT MOVES STUDENTS RESIDING IN WEST MELBOURNE FROM MELBOURNE HIGH SCHOOL TO PALM BAY HIGH SCHOOL OR HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL.
Many of the citizens of West Melbourne are not in favor of any redistricting proposal that moves students residing in West Melbourne from Melbourne High School to Palm Bay High School or Heritage High School.
Many of the citizens of West Melbourne believe that the redistricting proposal will negatively affect the families and tight-knit communities on our City, pulling friends apart and segregating our neighborhoods in an unwanted manner.
Many of the citizens of West Melbourne believe that the redistricting proposal will move youth in our community from a higher performing school to a lower performing school, which is unacceptable to the students, parents and citizens in our community.
Many of the citizens of West Melbourne believe that the redistricting proposal will negatively impact property values of affected homes in the City, negatively impact existing property owners and the potential for growth in our area, and result in loss of tax revenues to the City, Brevard County and Brevard Public Schools.
Many of the citizens of West Melbourne formally oppose any redistricting proposal that moves students residing in West Melbourne from Melbourne High School to Palm Bay High School or Heritage High School and demands the Brevard County School Board to seek alternative methods to alleviate and address school population issues while preserving the integrity of the West Melbourne community.
