They actually backed down and it is officially over which is just wild because I did not think they would listen. I am still kind of in shock but we really did it and I am so grateful you all kept the pressure on even when it felt like they …

On February 28, 2018, the SD#23 Board of Trustees passed a motion to reconfigure schools in West Kelowna effective September 2018. Parents were first informed of this motion on February 1, 2018, just 28 days before the motion was passed on a 5-2 vote.

SD#23's Policy and Procedures manual states that the Superintendent must present any school closures or consolidation to the Board of Trustees in November, to be followed by "a process of discussion and consultation with parents, staff and the community" no later than January. The policy also states that "consultation will be meaningful, and fair consideration will be given to all public input prior to the Board making its final decision".

Not only have the prescribed timelines been violated, but there was no consultation or discussion with the community. Both the Board Chair and the Superintendent acknowledged at the February 28th meeting that the School District's standard policies and practices were not adhered to in this case.

We are asking the SD#23 Board of Trustees to set aside their decision to reconfigure West Kelowna schools in September 2018 so that they can follow the policies by which they are bound. Please show your support by signing this petition so we can speak to the Board of Trustees with one voice.

In addition, please write to the Board of Trustees directly to let them know your thoughts on this decision. They won't change their mind if they don't hear from us!

Two hundred and fifty people have put their names on this and honestly I keep refreshing the page just to make sure it is not a glitch because that is a lot of people to care about a board meeting process. I remember sitting at home just wanting a few neighbors to back me up and now it feels like the whole town is actually paying attention to these broken policies.

This decision was made without proper consultation of the parents and school communities affected. It does not give the teachers, students, and parents enough time to plan for such a big change. The same can be said of any planned changes in the FI program. Consultation and lead-time are both necessary.

The numbers they used to justify this sudden and complicated transition are completely disingenuous. All one would need to do is compare the numbers and do their own math to understand why parents are not supporting this action for 2018.

This has not been thought through enough. Why the rush?? MBSS is crowed as is why add more people? Have the bussing issues been fixed? Cart before the horse comes to mind here.

The amount of pressure and anxiety a child faces alone starting middle and high school is hard enough. To throw them in with this little amount of preparation is completely unfair let alone having the children miss out on all the final year Big kid activities

I am so disappointed that the Trustees have not listened to the parents valid concerns about the pace of change. Why not introduce the proposed change in September 2019 allowing students to be prepared.

Our arguments were many times based in logic. The Board responded by telling us our feelings weren't valid & pushing thtough with a very short-sighted, ill-conceived & irresponsible decision anyway. This deplorable decision needs better planning to say the least.

I am signing this because the board didn’t follow its own rules when they made this decision. I believe it may be time for the ministry of education to step in.
