West Cary residents opposed to Cardinal Charter Academy

I am opposed to this school as it does not serve any unmet need in our area, will unnecessarily increase traffic in what is currently a residential area, and involves a FOR PROFIT education company. There are at least 5 elementary schools in the area that are top rated and the middle and high schools are some of the best in the state. Education is a right and SHOULD NOT be managed by for profit corporations who put profit ahead and student success. A short tour of Cardinal's current campus in Cary would demonstrate how this school is run - we considered it and when realized that it was a worse option than any public school in our area quickly dismissed it (there are NO windows in the classrooms so felt more like a prison than a learning environment). For those who want options other than the great public schools in our area, they should use the charter schools that already exist or fork over the money for private schools. I oppose this school for 2000+ students. Only 1 bus but hundreds of private vehicles will wreak havoc on this residential area's streets.

Against charter school for a number of reasons

Considering West Cary just opened a brand new K-5 school, with 4 additional schools within a 4 mile radius, ranging K-12 and plans for a new middle school, this charter school is complete overkill and clearly DOES NOT SERVE an unmet need in the area. 1. Cardinal's proposal is rushed at best, with a singular desire to quickly place rising 9th graders. Selling a K-12 plan is misleading when that is NOT the primary goal in the near term. Expand the current Cary campus instead within a reasonable area---not across town. 2. Why would we want a FL based company/school to profit from taxpayer money rather than our public school system and already underpaid teachers? 3. School will be built on Chatham County land with Cary address. This means additional burden to Cary roads and services leading into Yates Store Rd. 4. Yates Store Rd is NOT a 4-lane road all the way through as their application/proposal suggests 5. Imagine the increased traffic through the already horrific 4-way stop at Yates Store & Carpenter FireStation Rd. We need a stop light there before a school. Roads are not currently built to withstand the increased traffic. Cardinal proposes running only 1 bus in first year. Not a well thought out plan. 6. A joint use plan to me means we jointly share the burden to build and service. TOC and Chatham County needs to reconsider use of this land that borders one of West Cary's greatest treasures--The American Tobacco Trail. Build the school off Hwy 55 or 751, not off the ATT. 7. We need to consider the environmental impact this 20+ acre school will have. Again, why do we want to invite a FL-based, for profit company/school, to ruin a West Cary treasure forever.

As a former educator I have seen students not up to the academic level of their peers. Often many teachers in Charter schools are not properly certified and do not meet state standards for teaching !

This will be a huge negative for the subdivisions around Yates Store. This will exponentially increase the traffic and cause disruption to the residents! If there if any don't, please visit Haddon Hall subdivision in Apex, where Peak Charter started operating this year! The entire subdivision saw exponential increase in traffic and traffic related issues!! Many signs in the neighborhood suggest extremely unhappy parents. Please don't repeat that in West Cary!

I am completely opposed to my tax dollars used for a for-profit school when it could be used to improve the pre existing schools. Mills park schools need more room, improvement in play area, not to mention better teacher pay in all of wake county to improve retention. Not to line the pockets of some greedy charter school owners. Others have also mentioned the traffic and congestion problems we could face.

Building a 2000+ student school near the end of a dead-end road is a bad idea. Without a bus system it's an even worse idea. While this location will one day be a fine spot for a school, today is not that day. Until the roadways leading to this site are improved to support a heavy increase in traffic, I adamantly oppose school construction here as it is currently proposed.
