We, the staff and governors, are deeply concerned about the speed of traffic on London Road close to the school. Tenterfield School is also on London Road directly opposite Welwyn St Mary’s and therefore their children share the same road safety risks.

The volume of traffic continues to increase and the finalisation of the development of the Frythe with 196 homes will add to the problem. The traffic often exceeds the legal speed limit and therefore we are recommending that traffic calming measures between the Crescent and Ottaway Walk are installed.

There are over 500 children attending the two schools and we consider that their safety requires the reduction of traffic speed on this section of London Road.

Please sign the electronic petition alternatively come to the School Office if you would like to sign this petition.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Rev’d D Munchin

Chair of Governors

Watching the traffic flow past the school gates each morning confirms exactly why we started this initiative. I have been speaking with parents who are terrified to cross London Road with their children and their anxiety is the only fuel I need to keep pushing for these safety measures.

January 28, 2018

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not the only one terrified by the speed of cars near our school gates. Our children deserve a safe walk to class and this support shows the council that our community will not stay silent while their safety remains at risk.

As a retired member of Welwyn St Mary's teaching staff and a current grandparent of a Tenterfield pupil I have for many years felt concern for the safety of our children near the main London Road and would welcome anything that can be done to lessen the road dangers near both schools.

I live nearby and traffic as well as inconsiderate parking is a major problem. My sons attended Tenterfield and Welwyn St Mary's and one of them was injured (fortunately not seriously) when stepping onto the Zebra crossing. The driver didn't even stop. The traffic has increased since then, mainly due to property development in the village.

Not only am I concerned about the speed of traffic but also the parking of cars along the side of the road. It causes chaos at peak times and causes people to take risks. At some points along the road you cannot see the oncoming traffic, until it is too late.

The safety of the children is paramount. Although many drivers are considerate, some become so frustrated I have seen them mount the pavement and drive along the pavement between Tenterfield and the safety barrier because of the grid lock. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Please make changes before there is a tragedy.

Please not speed bumps. Not very effective against larger vehicles (eg 4X4s etc) and damages undercarriage and suspension of many cars even at slow speeds. Although unpopular, I would agree with a speed camera at both ends.

This road is used as a rat run to bypass the A1, traffic calming would not only reduce the speed of traffic but also put people off using it that don’t need access. I raised this with the police when my daughter attended st Mary’s, 1995-2000, to no avail.

I share the concern of the staff and governors .

Fully agree with the staff and governors concerns. Safety of the children should be an overriding consideration.
