Welcome backyard hens to our community!
I live in Montgomery county MD.raised 7 beautiful hens starting from the fluffy baby chicks and one of them started to lay eggs just recently. The whole process of building a beautiful chicken coop and run, learning about raising hens with my kids, neighbors and neighbors' kids, is a total rewarding experience, let alone expecting lots of fresh eggs to come! I read all about Montgomery county's new setback rules, HOA handbooks etc before I started this whole project, but it turned out I read the handbook of an older version from the HOA yahoo group site. Now I got a letter from HOA saying "no poultry of any kind" is allowed (except max 2 pets are allowed) and no pen/coop is allowed. Oh my gosh, I like to be a good citizen... but I don't want to give up my hens.!!! I talked to my neighbors and they visited my coop and no problem. Some neighbors brought their kids to visit my garden and my chicken coops and we talked about raising chickens and chicken fun facts. My daughter's Girl Scout troop is planning to come to visit the chicken coops and help around the chickens and learn about the chickens. I registered my chickens with Maryland State so officially they are licensed! ... Now I am facing to act in 7 days either removing my chicken and coops, or convincing HOA their rules are not reasonable....
