The town council just confirmed that weekly recycling pick-up is officially coming back to Huntersville. I am genuinely overwhelmed that we achieved this shift for our neighborhood. Please keep a close eye on your mail for the new collection schedule updates heading your way soon.

Recycling:

saves money • improves efficiency • reduces energy use • reduces fuel use • saves landfill space • improves air quality • improves water quality • reduces the rate of global warming

The EPA estimates that 75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. Here in Huntersville, where our waste management company picks up recycling bins once every two weeks, that number may be even lower. Currently, with a bi-weekly schedule, when the amount of residents' recyclable household materials exceeds the capacity of their one bin, some are choosing to store their recyclables until the next pick-up while many more are choosing to place recyclables in their trash bin.

One significant way to encourage residents to recycle more is to increase the frequency of recycling pick-up.

If you believe that our community would benefit from having a weekly recycling schedule, please sign this petition. When we reach 1,000 signatures, we will present it to the Huntersville town council. At that time, we'll also request more specific instructions on what can and can not be recycled.

Let's work together to help improve our community and to take care of our environment!

Seeing 500 signatures on this petition makes me feel like our neighborhood is finally ready to tackle the overflow in our bins. My own garage has been overflowing for weeks, so knowing so many of you share this frustration gives me real hope for the town council meeting.

I spent the afternoon looking at the overflowing bins down my street and it confirms exactly why this shift is necessary. Please read the comments left by your neighbors because their frustration with our current waste limits echoes what I see in my own driveway every single week.

We recycle tons and always go over 1 bin within 2 weeks! We had so much last time that we put some in a cardboard box which was not picked up but knocked over spilling junk all over our yard. A once a week pickup would be wonderful!

Weekly recycling would encourage residents to be more thorough in their trash separation. Biweekly pickups mean having to remember which week is recycling week and having a buildup of recycling at times.

Just saw this suggestion on my community page - to include two options in the petition: A) weekly with one bin, and B.) stay bi-weekly but give us each a second recyclables bin. This way, the town could pick the most cost-effective option, and still accomplish our goal.

With the increase in frequency of Amazon deliveries and in general more online shopping, we have lots of boxes and packaging to recycle and our bin fills up before 2 weeks frequently.

Paying what we do and also having to drive trash to the dump every week (where there’s now a traffic jam most days) is unacceptable. Raise fees if you have to but pickup recyclables every week please.

When our family recycles as we should, we can fill 2 recycling bins for every 1 trash bin.. since recycle comes once every 2 weeks most of which is in the trash bin could have been recycled if we had weekly pickup.
