These changes MUST happen. Webster Conservatory has a clear and shocking disparity between number of students of color who are admitted and number of white students admitted which, among the other problems mentioned, is first and foremost unacceptable. As this document says beautifully and clearly, our program cannot truthfully claim to champion diversity when there is a lack of representation for, and support of, the people of color in our community. WebCo can do better and WebCo must do better.

“Higher education” should progress our thinking beyond our racist high school textbooks. Webco, as a private learning institution, has the power to change and be anti-racist.

My Black classmates did more to educate me about cultural appropriation, representation, race, racism, and my place as a white artist than all my classes in the conservatory combined. I’ll always be grateful for my classmates and those hard conversations, but they were spending their time and money to prepare for a career in the theatre, not to educate me and my white classmates. You further burden your BIPOC students every moment you don’t address this; listen to their voices and do better Webco

Enough is enough. These voices need to be heard and listened to. Stop trying to meet a quota, it is inherently racist. Start taking necessary action.

Webster has been a “leader” so to speak in its structure, mission and in its outreach. Let it be a platform to light the way for other schools, conservatories in addition to local theatres in the area. Enough is enough and I stand with my fellow BIPOC alumni to make sure this change happens. It’s time.

Attending Webco gave me strong technical skills, amazing contacts, mentors, and life-long friends. Attend Webco was also traumatic. The individual and systemic racism I experienced there will be with me for the rest of my life and has fueled me in my Artistic Mission to fight for lasting change in any institution I enter. Webster, step up. We wouldn’t be holding you accountable if we didn’t believe that you can change for the better.

As an incoming student I’d love to see all of this implemented. Theatre should be at the forefront of change and my education in theatre should reflect that

I believe that if conservatories really do want the diversity they say they want they would have it. They have the means to make it work but seem to lack the drive or the kick in the right direction. Let this be that persuasive, decisive kick.

No more skirting around the problems one closed door conversation at a time. Open the doors, open your minds, open theatre education.
