My husband has taught at Rock Valley College since 1989. He left behind the opportunity for higher pay in the engineering industry because he loved teaching as an undgergrad so much.
He reworks his classes to make them better every summer, takes on volunteer committee positions, and extra responsibilities on a regular basis. We rarely travel over his 'vacations' because he dedicates so much of his time to updating his skills, taking classes and earning certificates. He attends conferences for the learning experience and has presented at them too.
He is dedicated to improving his teaching skills, recruiting new students, and learning the latest in technology. He does this without any extra pay and he does it gladly, because he knows that it improves his students' experience at Rock Valley College.
The Board of Trustees needs to know that the faculty at RVC are there becasue the WANT to be there. They are there because they CARE about their students. They took a pay freeze for three years with the last contract. Please don't treat them like spoiled children who want an extra sucker to add to an already huge basket of candy. They are paid less than many people who did not go on to college and they are only asking for fair compensation for the incredible work that they do.
Signed,
Wife of a faculty member who spends almost all of his free time working to be a better teacher!

I support all organizations who work toward receiving a fair working wage and also fair working conditions. Those attempting to break up unions are trying to shatter the building blocks of the American Labor Force which is the backbone of the economy of this country.

I have never seen a harder working group of professionals as the RVC Nursing staff. Give them commensurate pay for the life-long learning they must endure to teach a dynamic, ever-changing profession.

I also would like to thank our negotiating team for an awesome job. I know as nursing faculty, we do not teach at RVC for the money. We love our students and teaching them what we love. But we all deserve to be treated fairly and to feel respected as professionals by our Board while working at RVC.

A meaningful and useful education happens at the interface of a gifted teacher and an willing learner. That is what RVC is about. It's time to show that our community supports both by paying the faculty in accordance with their gifts and commitment to a willing student body.
