105.5 KNAC was wildly popular from 1986-1995. There was no other station like it at the time. A lot of people found out about the station through word of mouth as the transmission signal was weak. But when the signal did come in, it sounded great with an echo effect. The disc jockeys were excellent at the time especially Long Paul, Dangerous Darren, and Laurie Free. KNAC expanded your rock and roll knowledge as they played anything and everything that was hard rock/heavy metal. It's good that there is KNAC.COM, but it is not the same as 105.5 KNAC. The station was worth $7 million at the time in 1995, but it got sold for $14 million which then became Mexican radio. It was a money thing, not a loss in listenership as to why it changed over. If 105.5 KNAC was to come back on the air, it would have to be independently owned like it was back in the day. Unfortunately, most of the radio stations in the U.S. are owned by either CBS, IHeart Radio (formerly Clear Channel), Cumulus, and Entercom. CBS is looking at getting out of the radio business, and IHeart, and Cumulus could declare bankruptcy within the next year as they bought up too many radio stations. The radio industry has been going downhill since the mid 90s when companies were allowed to buy up as many radio stations as they could, which in turn promoted no competition. So radio stations sounded all the same. The only way for 105.5 KNAC to come back would be for one of the big media giants (who may declare bankruptcy soon) to sell off some of their radio stations to become independently owned. I first found out about KNAC in 1988 when visiting Huntington Beach where my grandparents lived. I was flipping through the radio dial, and Megadeth's "Peace Sells But Who's Buying" was playing. I grew up in the Bay Area, and there were no radio stations that were playing that kind of music. So whenever I came back to Southern California, I would listen to KNAC.
