We, the Palestinian Law Students at TAU Law, call on students from U.S. schools to refuse to take part in the iTrek Trip to Israel

We, the Palestinian law students, and Palestinian alumni of Tel Aviv University Law School, express our opposition to the iTrek Policy Trip to Israel and its repellent attempt to use our name and capitalize on our identity to advance its propaganda. We therefore find ourselves compelled to clarify our position and call on students from U.S. schools to refuse to take part in the iTrek trips.

iTrek targets students from elite law schools, as well as business and policy schools in the United States and the United Kingdom, aiming to provide them with positive view of Israel. It is a politically motivated endeavor that is designed to whitewash Israel’s decades-long colonization, oppression and dispossession of Palestinians.

Itrek was founded by a former Israeli government official and has previously received funding from the Israeli government and is an integral part of Israel’s Hasbara (propaganda) machine. It was founded as a response to “many people around the world associating Israel with religion and conflict, which often translates into an unfavorable public opinion of Israel.” According to its website, iTrek is “dedicated to building greater understanding and appreciation for Israel among present and future leaders.” To achieve this, iTrek deliberately targets law schools with “a strong track record for turning out tomorrow’s leaders and change-makers”.

These trips erase Palestinians, their struggles, and their various forms of oppression in any iTrek public materials. Moreover, iTrek’s approach seeks to present the conflict as “two-sided,” dismissing the intricate system of oppression by the occupying power and presenting a false equivalency between occupier and occupied.

New reports continue to shed light on Israel’s Apartheid in Palestine. Amnesty International recently published yet another damning report of Israel's Apartheid practices in February 2022, joining other organizations such as Human Rights Watch, and finally reiterating what Palestinian intellectuals and legal scholars have been asserting for decades. The report reveals the true extent of Israel’s Apartheid regime, calling the international community to act against Israel’s cruel policies of segregation, dispossession and exclusions across all territories under its control. According to Amnesty’s report “There is no possible justification for a system built around institutionalized and prolong racist oppression of millions of people. Apartheid has no place in our world, and states which choose to make allowances for Israel will find themselves on the wrong side of history.”

Israel’s Apartheid practices, systematic oppression and discrimination of Palestinians has been well documented and entrenched in legal policies. This also extends to Palestinian citizens of Israel, as Amnesty’s report delineates, and as well demonstrated by Adalah’s database of over 65 Israel discriminatory laws against Palestinian citizens.

Now that the world has finally started to grapple with what is happening to Palestinians, we hope you all see this trip for what it is and refuse to participate in it. We, Palestinian students and scholars, see in the iTrek trips part of a larger, coordinated effort to erase from public opinion Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians, on both sides of the Green Line.

Participating in a propaganda trip to Israel harms us, our families, and our people in very real ways. It contributes to upholding a culture of impunity by normalizing a system of racial and colonial domination. iTrek organizers tried to co-opt Palestinian students through having them participate in this trip’s itinerary, presenting it as merely a delegation from elite U.S. schools. We declined. We refuse to whitewash Israel’s crime against our people.

We call on you to refuse as well.

نحن، طلاب وطالبات حقوق فلسطينيون في جامعة تل ابيب، خريجي وخريجات كلية الحقوق في جامعة تل ابيب، نؤكد بشكل تام معارضتنا لبرنامج أيترك ومحاولات استغلالنا واستغلال هويتنا في حملاته الدعائية المختلفة. نجد انفسنا ملزمين بتوضيح موقفنا ودعوة طلاب الحقوق في الجامعات العديدة في الولايات المتحدة برفض المشاركة في هذا االبرنامج. البرنامج يهدف الى تجميل صورة إسرائيل بنظر المشاركين\ات وهو جزء من محاولة سياسية لتبييض صورة الاستعمار الإسرائيلي، قمع الفلسطينيين والاستمرار بنزع حقهم في وطنهم.

في بداية تأسيسه, تلقى البرنامج تمويله من الحكومة الإسرائيلية، كما انه جزء لا يتجزأ من آلة الدعاية الإسرائيلية المألوفة لجميعنا. بناءً على موقعهم الالكتروني، أيترك تأسس كردة فعل ل- "اصوات في ارجاء العالم تربط اسرائيل فقط بالدين والصراع، وهو ما يترجم في كثير من الأحيان إلى رأي عام غير داعم لإسرائيل". وفقا للموقع الالكتروني للبرنامج فانه "يهدف لبناء أكبر قدر من التفهم والتقدير لإسرائيل بين قيادات الحاضر والمستقبل". لتحقيق ذلك، يستهدف البرنامج عمداً كليات حقوق ذات سجل في انتاج قادة الغد وصانعي التغيير. هذا البرنامج يمحو الفلسطينيين ونضالهم، كما يغض النظر عن أشكال القمع المختلفة التي تمارسها إسرائيل اتجاههم. علاوة على ذلك، يسعى البرنامج إلى عرض القضية الفلسطينيّة كصراع ذو وجهان، وبهذا صرف النظر عن نظام القمع الذي تمارسه سلطات الاحتلال، وتقديم معادلة تكافؤية زائفة بين الاحتلال والقابعين تحته.

هناك العديد من التقارير الحديثة التي تلقي الضوء على نظام الفصل العنصري الإسرائيلي في فلسطين. مؤخرا نشرت منظمة العفو الدولية تقريرا يدين إسرائيل بممارسات الفصل العنصري، والذي بدوره يؤكد ما قاله خبراء القانون الفلسطينيون منذ عقود. يكشف التقرير حقيقة نظام الفصل العنصري الإسرائيلي، ويهدف الى حث المجتمع الدولي باتخاذ إجراءات ضد سياسات الفصل والتفرقة التي تنتهجها إسرائيل بحق الفلسطينيين من سلبهم أراضيهم واضطهادهم في جميع الأراضي الخاضعة لسيطرتها. وفقاً لتقرير منظمة العفو الدولية "لا يوجد مبرر لنظام مبني على أسس اضطهاد عنصري يطال الملاين من الافراد. نظام الفصل العنصري لا مكان له في عالمنا، والدول التي تختار تقديم الدعم لدولة الاحتلال ستجد نفسها في الجانب الخطأ من التاريخ". نظام الفصل العنصري الممنهج، الاضطهاد والتمييز الذي تمارسه إسرائيل ضد المجتمع الفلسطيني (يشمل أيضا المواطنين الفلسطينيين في إسرائيل) قد تم ترسيخه في البنيّة القانونيّة الاسرائيلية. وهذا ما يؤكده تقرير منظمة العفو الدولية وتوضحه قاعدة بيانات جمعية عدالة التي تضم أكثر من 65 قانونا إسرائيليا يميز ضد المواطنين الفلسطينيين.

الآن، بعد أن بدأ العالم أخيرا بالتضامن مع الفلسطينيين والتصدي لاضطهادهم، نأمل أن يعي جميعكم حقيقة هذا البرنامج ورفض المشاركة فيه. فنحن نرى بالبرنامج كمجهود لطمس حقيقة اضطهاد إسرائيل المستمر للفلسطينيين على جانبي الخط الأخضر. المشاركة في برنامج الرحلة الدعائية إلى إسرائيل تضرنا نحن، تضر أسرانا وشعبنا على حد سواء، بل أكثر من ذالك, فانها تساعد اسرائيل بالإفلات من المسائلة القانونية والاخلاقية وتمثل موافقة وتأكيد على تطبيع منهجية السيطرة العنصرية والاستعمارية. حاول منظمو البرنامج توريط الطلاب الفلسطينيين من خلال محاولة اشراكهم في تخطيط البرنامج، وعرضه على أنه مجرد استضافة لوفد من كليات النخبة في الولايات المتحدة، لكن محاولاتهم باءت بالفشل. نحن نرفض طمس جرائم دولة الاحتلال ضد شعبنا الفلسطيني.
