It's time to recognise the racism endured and say sorry. . Australia's first peoples received an apology a few years back. Saying sorry is not that hard and it begins the healing process.

As a non-traveller who has witnessed anti-traveller descrimination all of my life, I am embarrassed by the prejudice exercised and sanctioned by the state and the agents of the state.

I believe that the way that the Traveller Community is being and has been treated by successive Irish governments is a national scandal and the Traveller Community deserves an apology.

Travellers have been "trashed" since forever... enough. They are a distinct minority ethnic group who have suffered at the hands of settled society simply because they would not conform. I call BS. Diversity is KEY to a wonderful world.

I truly believe that it is not before time that the Irish government acknowledges and apologies for the great injustices, cruelties and stigma that has been inflicted upon the Irish traveller community. We are a proud people with a unique identity, we belong and our lives and rights are equally as important as every other human being! I've never asked for any special recognition, I am a tax paying, intelligent and educated member of society, just like the many thousands of travellers who are not recognised as equals amongst the communitys we conduct ourselves in. We deserve recognition for our ethnic identity and the contributions that a vast majority of our people make to our country. We deserve an apology for our family members who have been subjected to cruelties which the government would never dream of inflicting on the settled community or upon the ethnic groups which cross into our country and are automatically accepted and acknowledged. Ireland is our home too and we matter, we belong and we will always be here!

It is time to put an end to the systemic and institutionalised racism and prejudice against Travellers. It is time to respect them and their ways. Please stop marginalising the travellers and respect them for who they are.

In support of Travellers' rights, in particular in support of the recognition of the Traveller people as an ethnic minority.
