I am not a traveller... but I have many friends who are. I hate the way the Traveller community are treated.... makes me so bloody angry !!! It's about time things change for the better... Good Luck to the Traveller Community and I hope the politicians wake up and do what is right !! xx

Without any hatred or contempt, we request that our Irish government issues this apology to us, along with formally recognising our unique identity as a distinct minority ethnic group in Irish society.

As a young Traveller woman I feel that it is a breach of my human rights not to be formally recognised while offhandedly being viewed and treated as different in Irish society with no legal protection under any race/ethnic legislation. For the Irish government to continue in their quest to ‘de-ethicise’ our Traveller identity is irrational and unjustifiable. The significance of legal ethnic status cannot be under-estimated as it would be a long awaited step towards equality in all areas of society including Traveller representation in state bodies. Ethnicity recognition would be the groundwork for the Irish government to finally honour their responsibilities to the international conventions on human rights.
