We support Mitch Berg and Fuego Studio School. Offering intimate multi-day workshops and collaborative work space, Fuego is a hub for creativity, learning and fun. We understand that a conditional use permit is required for Fuego to function as a legal, public entity in Bernalillo County. We recognize that Fuego is located in Albuquerque's South Valley -- a neighborhood sensitive to economic and cultural change -- and we are aware of an appeal against this three-year permit. With this in mind, we believe that Fuego is a positive contribution to the neighborhood and trust Mitch and his council of advisors to do the outreach necessary to build and maintain healthy relationships. We support the acquisition of a conditional use permit that will allow Mitch to operate Fuego and therefore share the transformational power of art.

ive been talking with mitch about the permit process and he really appreciates all the notes you guys are leaving. its clear that so many people see the value of fuego in our community and that support is going to be really important when this heads back to the county.

the momentum behind fuego is honestly blowing me away right now. seeing so many people back mitch and the space makes it clear just how much this studio means to our neighborhood.

I am delighted to live just several doors down from Mitch and Fuego and watch it grow into a creative hub. For many years I would walk by what was a field of weeds with derelict houses and a string of tenants that never stayed long. I could see the potential of the large space and envision some special person coming along and bringing in new life. Lo and behold Mitch moved in several years ago and transformed the lot into a magical whimsical artist mecca. Hurrah for his vision and viva el Fuego!

As an art educator for 36 years the transformative power of art is real and this special place reaches people that are often missed.

I have lived on Riverside Drive in the South Valley for 24 years and have been involved in many political and community projects...Fuego is one of the best developments I’ve seen here in all these years, a place where creativity, social engagement and hands-in training can all happen within a diverse neighborhood for the good of the neighborhood. Fuego adds value and quality of life for the rest of us who live here and should be encouraged, endorsed, permitted and supported by those charged with guiding development in our neighborhood.

Mitch Berg’s outreach in the South Valley has met with tremendous success. The next step is to have access to a physical space with equipment, tools, and materials that allows the participants to complete their projects.

Mitch is creating an effort of positive change for his property and neighborhood. Change is inevitable and this one is based on people being creative and not a corporate greed grab. His efforts to reach out to his neighbors and city are examples of his intentions and willingness to work with and not against the south valley.

Mitch is acting with a spirit of pure generosity and generative creativity. It is exciting to see how he has turned his property, once an abandoned shack where heroin users got high, into a place where these same people can gain skills, confidence, and paths out of addiction. It is change, and it is entirely positive!
