A Win-Win for Winnetka-Restoration of Crow Island Woods AND a Solution to Stormwater Flooding
For the past 9 months, Strand Associates has worked with Winnetka residents, the Village of Winnetka, and the Cook County Forest Preserve to develop a holistic solution to alleviate flooding in Southwest Winnetka. Strand presented its Final Concept Report to the Village Council on June 7th. This plan is the most economical, incorporates environmentally-sound grey/green best practices, and provides protection to the affected areas. It involves, in part:
- The restoration of Crow Island Woods to its former state as a wetland including preservation and reforestation of the vegetation that is there.
- The creation of an area that will provide habitat for a wide variety of wetland species, as well as a recreational and educational center for residents and students from Winnetka and throughout Cook County.
This plan greatly improves Crow Island Woods and makes it a place that our community and future generations will continue to treasure.
There is a danger that an uninformed and emotionally-charged opposition to this plan will sink the entire project, leaving Southwest Winnetka to continue to flood, and the rest of the Village to continue to be inconvenienced.
Let's all row in the same direction. The Village Council needs your support to continue to move forward with this plan - including community outreach and discussions with the Forest Preserve.
Please sign this petition if you would like the Village Trustees to proceed with further refinement of this Vision as presented by Strand. Feel free to add your comments as well.
