Re: Provision of alternative finance for university tuition fees and living expenses
As students who wish to move on to further education, we would like to raise the above issue.
A great deal of emphasis has been placed on the importance and numerous advantages of attending university and pursuing further education, but an issue which I, and many other college students’ feel isn’t being addressed is the methods in which going to university can be made possible for all students of different backgrounds and religious groups.
Going to university is something we all aspire to do, but due to repayments being at the real interest rate, the current Student Loans System is incompatible with the Islamic faith.
There are many students’ which are having to deal with this issue every year and is something which needs to be highlighted and resolved- no individual should have to choose between their future and their religion. To add to this, the current system has also led to family breakdowns. Parents have been pressuring their children to go to university regardless of the Islamic ruling against giving or receiving interest because they wish for their children to be in the best possible position when applying for jobs’ as you can imagine, this can be a rather traumatizing experience which can very easily be resolved by the government.
The good news is that the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills have confirmed they have identified aSharī‘ah-compliant model, which may be implementable through the Student Loans Company, to assist those, both Muslim and non-Muslim, so affected. However, they were unable to introduce this model alongside the increased feesbecause of various issues; such as full IT systems feasibility, VAT and a requirement to pass primary legislation; which might delay introduction. While it has been confirmed that the earliest a Sharia-compliant model may be made available for the academic years of 2016-2017- an exact time limit for the model hasn’t been put into place.
Clearly this delay would be very damaging to the educational prospects of affected students.
Accordingly, we have signed this petition in the hope you can lend your valued support to accelerate the introduction of the alternative scheme.

its so unfair that people have to choose between their degree and their faith. just make it fair for everyone so we can actually focus on graduating.
