As medical students of the University of South Carolina studying in the era of technology, a reliable and efficient internet connection is a necessity of our educational progression. While the clinical years consist of off-campus learning, the first two didactic years of our education are focused at the school of medicine main campus and centered around the online learning platform blackboard. For both the SOM medical students and the numerous other programs on campus, access to sites such as blackboard, email accounts, medical journals, and supplementary educational resources are the crux of many students learning styles and invaluable tools in our costly educational process. This academic year has begun with the hard realization that while we have now been burdened with a $300/semester technology fee, the technology and internet resources at the SOM are severely limiting student progression and hindering efficient educational opportunity. I and the hereafter signed, would respectfully like to petition the SOM to take immediate corrective action to address the internet connectivity and speed issues in the interest of each and every student who has dedicated their time and effort to the pursuit of some aspect of medicine in support of the mission of USC SOM "To improve the health of the people of the state of South Carolina through medical education, research, and the delivery of health care."
