It makes more sense to choose a rector and if they don't fulfil their role, hold a motion to elect a new rector in a years time. Surely almost anyone is better than no one for a year?

It is unfortunate that Edward Snowdon was unable to fulfil his role as rector in representing students. Now, we need the opportunity to have a rector that can actually represent us and stand for us in the university court.

Many societies are on the brink of nominating candidates following the news of no nominations. If nominations are reopened, maybe we will have a record number of nominations!

We have had three years without effective Rectorial support and I am dismayed to learn that the SRC is considering allowing the post to become vacant. The student body needs an active voice at this time of uncertainty, and each individual has a right to be represented by a rector who is here on campus and active on our behalf.

It is important that all students of UofG are represented by a Rector who can forward our views at all times! There should not be any time when we are not represented fully, as we will face more difficulty with Brexit and a possible increase in tuition fees as well as potential changes to university requirements for EU-students will make it impossible or very difficult for some students to attend UofG, or in fact any university.

There is no reasonable justication to delay the election. Students this year expeting to vote may not have the opportunity to vote of delayed until next year.

Do you want a working rector that can represent students on the university court after several years of sacrificing this position for a political point? So do many, if not most other students as well – but signing a petition that just demands a rector doesn't help with that. The reason the SRC are thinking about delaying the election is because literally nobody could be bothered to propose a single candidate for rectorship. While there is a point to be made that the SRC as well as the other two unions should have dealt with this problem better, it is ultimately every student's responsibility to propose a good candidate for rector. So to the people who are so passionate about us having a good rector, I would recommend you go out to try and find one.

How can they do this. We should campaign to get a rector and get rid of the SRC because it doesn't represent us anyway. A rector on court would represent us much more effectively

In case anyone missed my comment earlier:
Of the two options, I believe appointing a rector as soon as possible would be the best move. Delaying the vote until later leaves too much uncertainty - there is no guarantee of when the next vote would be. It could be in October when student engagement has been historically lower compared to spring for the last 150 years or so. Or it could be delayed until the following spring where key talks have already taken place without a rector. I also do not think it is undermining council as the SRC are appointed to represent the student body. The rectorial elections were not really in anyone's manifesto so the student body need to make clear what they want. People are clearly passionate about this so I believe, though it will take a lot of campaigning, the right candidate can be chosen. Also, the last rectorial elections happened with adequate time to campaign and we still ended up with a largely absent seat on court which does tell us that length of time is not the only factor in choosing an appropriate candidate.

We dont need a rector "Now", we need the RIGHT rector, forcing the vote straight away will clash with student union elections and deadlines, and not give enough time for campaigning for the right candidates. Also, Strong-arming the SRC like this is totally inappropriate and undermines the point of the council that we voted for.
