Fall Schedule: November 17th-20th: Contact individuals who have shown interest in the fall tryouts and will have general sign-ups for others who are interested. November 29th (Saturday): Limited competition for those who have expressed interest with the goal of recruiting 10-12 members for the initial fall competitions. February 6th-9th: Sign-up for spring qualifying tournament March 3rd: Competition day (if interest is sufficiently high, there may be need for a 2 day competition.) October 11th: Second hearing for the organization Format: Establishing members of the club will use their experience and capacity to judge the competition in combination with 1-3 faculty advisers to ensure fairness and best possible crop for the impending competitions. Once members have been selected, there will be one set of practice rounds after extensive training sessions, followed by a second set of debate rounds to decide the structure and the membership in the travelling team. As always, the board’s decision can be challenged by any team, and will be adjudicated by the team as a whole, and a faculty adviser, should the need arise. Leadership: Once Spring recruitment has completed, all members of the team will elect new officers, with the exception of the debate team captain, with the stipulation that 3L members are the only ones qualified for the presidency, and a 2L member is only qualified for the vice-presidency. The Captain of the debate team position will be initially filled by the performance of the strongest debater on the team. After the Second year, the success of individuals in the actual competitions from the previous years will unbiasedly determine the captain. In the Second year, the winner of the Spring qualifier will serve as a co-captain with the most successful member of the first year’s travelling team who does not already hold an officer position. In the first year, and in the initial creation of the team, there will be interim officers who will be assigned based on strengths, previous debate experience, and through consultation with the faculty advisor and the creating members. Other Activities: The team will host a two annual debates where members of the debate team take on faculty members based on topics that are of great importance to WCL students, ranging from academics to world politics and law. OR Members of the team showcase two debates, arguing the compelling sides of the most pressing issues. The audience participation will/could help decide the victor, and the “WCL’s Champion.” Also, the audience will submit the topics they find interesting through our website. Starting the second year, members of the debate will participate as judges in local high school debate tournaments (with the goal of providing good adjudication to the most important tournaments (County, District, and State championships)) The team will hold practice tournaments every week, which will be open to students. Students who do not make the team, but our interested can join us as researchers and have the opportunity to practice with the team, in hopes of qualifying in future competitions. Down the line, we hope to host a tournament List of available local competitions:
