Wayzata Elementary School Start Times

Very difficult schedule for young children and working parents with this time change.

Little ones need attention if left at 210 pm high schoolers can stay safe relatively

This is difficult for working parents. Elementary age students cannot come home to an empty house, so many parents would have to completely change their work schedules and/or have the added cost of after school care. Middle School and High School students are able to be home without parental supervision.

this is ridiculous for young children to be up this early. They need sleep to learn.

Find a vendor who can support a single tier. Unemployment is high - people need jobs - let's put them to work driving buses.

It is completely unacceptable for the elementary school kids to go to an early start school.

This is clearly a no brainer. The elementary start time must stay the same for the numerous reasons stated by all. This decision should be based on considering the facts and making the best decision for the entire district in mind, not one particular group or grade level. And all the research clearly indicates the need for sleep is greater with elementary school agers versus high school level. Do the right thing and keep the elementary times at 9am.

please don't change the timings. this will cause unnecessary chaos in my child's life, please don't change, with this new time, it will create lot of problems for my child or any child.

This is ridiculous. High school aged kids need more sleep obviously, but to get it at the expense of grade school children is absurd, they need it even more! To make little kids be out to a bus by 6:45 AM and then to be home for longer after school without parents (very few parents are able to be home by 2:20 for their grade school aged children) is ridiculous. I'm all about helping out our older middle school and high-school aged kids, but leave the elementary kids out of it, keep their start time the same.

I do not support earlier start times for Elementary school students for the following reasons: - Research shows that test scores suffer with earlier start times - Proposed bus pickup times are far too early for young children and could impact their sleep patterns and safety in being outside in the winter months - Difficult schedule for working parents to find after-school care for students - Que Tal spanish program would have to be entirely re-worked and this is a HUGE value to students and the Wayzata school district in general

Research shows that later start times improve student alertness and retention. Plus, it improves visibility and weather conditions for drivers and those who need to wait for buses.

Making it better for one, doesn't have to be at the cost of another group. The objective is good, but the solution is so poor. If there's no money to get more buses, then simply don't do it.

This idea is dangerous for the little ones waiting for a bus in the dark and difficult for families with two working parents.

Pathetic to make little kids get up that early! Shameful!

I currently have 2 children in the Wayzata elementary school system attending Kimberly Lane, transitioning to Meadow Ridge next year, and another child soon to be there. The proposal to have elementary school students dropped at school at 7:20 am and depart from school at 2:20 pm I feel is detrimental to most families that have two working parents in the household. My wife and I will not be able to be home by 2:30 pm to see our children off the bus. Our current setup of having a high school student in the neighborhood get our children off the bus will no longer work since the high school kids will now get out after the elementary school kids. This will require us to find more expensive after school care options. Families that currently depend on older siblings to be home for younger siblings will also be similarly impacted. Many if not most households with two working parents will not see increased time with their elementary school-age children just because they are out of school earlier. My family will actually see less family time because my wife and I will still get home at the same time but now our children will need to go to bed sooner or worse go to bed at the same time and lose out on precious sleep which can only have a negative impact on our children.

I have 2 students in Wayzata schools. A first grader in Plymouth Creek and a tenth grader in high school. I feel that I can be very fair in this matter, since I have best interest of both of my kids at heart. Here is what our family thinks. As much as I don't like my high schooler getting up so early, I feel that making my little guy wake up to catch the bus at 6:45 would be a disastrous experience. My tenth grader actually doesn't mind an early start since he is involved in sports and feels that he still has some hours left in a day after finishing his practices or games. I don't feel there is going to be any advantage at all for him as instead of getting up early he will just stay super late at night doing his homework. His homework load is insane since he is taking AP and honor classes. I also absolutely cannot agree to their proposal of high schoolers leaving their last block of classes early to go to their sports practices. It is just not right. In fact, I can't belive somebody thought of such a thing. Academics come first, no matter what. On other hand, I can't imagine how I will be able to drag our little guy out of bed that early and have him perform decently at school. We need more buses to really benefit all the kids in a district. The solution proposed is not a solution but a complete fiasco. We are very disappointed in a district for proposing such a thing.

Change the schedule for highschoolers? If they start later they will only go to bed later! The schedule works great now - don't change it. IT AFFECTS ELEMENTARY AGED KIDS TERRIBLY.
