The city heard us and decided to move the shelter to a more appropriate location. Thank you for showing up and turning the tide on this decision. Keep your eyes on the local board agendas to ensure this remains a safe space for our children.

Dear Wayland Families:
Last week Wayland Sports Ltd. received a letter from the City of Richmond stating that a 36 bed homeless shelter would be re-located right next door to our Children’s sport centre. While we support the city’s efforts to create more beds and supports for the homeless (currently the homeless shelter that they will be re-locating only has 10 beds), we are concerned that the location they have picked is not a good fit, given the population that our business serves.
Our business neighbours also agree that the homeless shelter is not a good fit for us, and have written the attached letter and petition to be presented to the City of Richmond.
There will be an information meeting this Thursday September 21st regarding this project. Wayland Sports and our business neighbours will be in attendance. We urge all concerned and affected to attend this information meeting.

My son is not often at the Waylands sports Richmond but when he is I know is is safe. Now that the city is planning a homeless shelter right next door I am not as ease with that idea. A public hearing should have been held for all surrounding businesses. Not Cool City Counsil.
It is important to have shelters for the homeless however I am wondering why the city would consider an industrial area near the highway a place for those who had no cars to get around. Also it will be next to a children's gymnastic and swimming arena which I feel would be putting our children at risk for potential personal harm. Pls reconsider your plan
I don't think is a good idea to have a shelter next to any public facility with high traffic of children. There is an incident on Sept 19, 17 Tuesday at Minoru Arena, a homeless man stay in the girl's washroom for a period of time, staff can only ask him nicely to leave, by the time RCMP showed up he is long gone.
I have young children and often walk my kids to their activities. I would be concerned for their safety and my safety should this new shelter move forward. I would probably reconsider their enrollment and look to another facility.
Providing beds to the homeless is much needed however not in such close proximity to a children's gym. My toddler doesn't need to be exposed to mental illness and or substance abuse issues at this young age. Such expose will only cause fear and confusion. Find a more suitable area
I understand that the homeless need a space to live and I fully support having a homeless centre in Richmond- but not beside a recreational facility for children. While not every homeless person suffers from metal illness or drug/alcohol problems a high percentage do. My daughter spends six hours a week at this gym. I'd like to be able to drop her off at her gymnastics class knowing she will be safe. In the summertime kids often eat their snacks outside on the grass. There could be needles or broken bottles laying around and homeless people coming and going. If a shelter is opened in this location I would take my business elsewhere (as I'm sure many other parents would) for the safety of my daughter and my own piece of mind. This would be unfair and devastation to Wayland Sports. The city has a large building on the boardwalk in a Steveston that has been sitting empty for 5 years. There are plenty of other more appropriate locations.
