No to a new tower on Robsart Street, Stockwell SW9
Wayland Action Group
We want the developer to abandon any idea of a new tower block and to come forward with a more appropriate design for Wayland House (map), reflecting the views of local residents and groups, and we ask Lambeth Planning and local councillors to press them to do so.
The building is part of Stockwell Park Estate, owned and run by Community Trust Housing . They have planning consent to put a new front on the existing building and to refurbish it without increasing the height. But now they want to go beyond that consent and perhaps build a much bigger tower block composed of 3 buildings of 19, 17 and 15 storeys. The number of flats will go from 86 to 160, mostly larger than now. All will be sold and only 84 would be affordable housing. They say they are consulting with residents in the area to get opinions on their latest proposal, before finalising their planning application. Wayland Action Group believes that such a development would be unwanted and unnecessary. It would also disfigure a valued landscape and bring overshadowing to a precious park and to all the gardens, houses and flats around it.
