Unfortunately the department did not listen to our pleas and Dr. Watkins has since taken new employment. He is now Professor and Coordinator of the Cultural and Historic Preservation program at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. It is our loss and Salve's gain.

It has been brought to our attention that our beloved director of Public History at Appalachian State University, Dr. Charles Watkins, is being forced to retire. We believe this to be an injustice not only to Dr. Watkins, but to his many students (former, current and potential) and his colleagues who all value his insight, experience and mentoring. Losing Dr. Watkins would not only doom the Public History program, which brings in large enrollment numbers for the history department, but also send an unjust message to public historians everywhere: that we're not true historians.
