Not really a student at this university but I have friends there and I’m actually concern for their lack of needs there

Waterloo needs to shape up! There have been far too many suicides. Students need support and counseling.

I have personally had mental health issues. I saw help at a clinic with the encouragement of my family, but I can’t imagine how hard it is for some people with out the additional support on campus. Getting help quickly is importent for all cases. I would also like to suggest sending (possibly through email) a “quick mental health fact sheet” at the beginning and middle of each term. This can include common situations, what to do, how to help a friend, and a link to find more information.

The number of students who suffer without the proper support they need is appalling. I hope that the school places more emphasis on mental health in the future for free 24 /7 hour mental healthcare by counsellors on campus. It bugs me that they don't have free evening counselling available to students busy during the day, hopefully that changes and hopefully teachers and students are able to better accommodate for students struggling. This petition is doing a great thing I strongly support.

I wholeheartedly agree that they need to stop triaging students on the basis of severity! The way to prevent crisis situations is to get help when it is NOT YET A CRISIS. Students should not have to be in an extreme situation in order to receive adequate care.

What the point of having some of the best programs and students from all over the world, if this is the cost for it?
60 years of innovation, but at what costs?
How many have suffered like this?
The only way for us to grow as a university community is to look after one another and care more about lives than about academic performace.

This is a huge problem in Waterloo and it is more dire than ever that we address the problem at its root, the students.

As a school that prides itself on innovation, the initiatives towards mental health (i.e. preventative measures, resources) are highly attainable and greatly overdue in regards to what uWaterloo can achieve. Let's make this right, in honour of those who have suffered and those who continue to suffer in the silence that is the experience of mental illness.

I was triaged because I wasn't suicidal but I was in dire need of help. I waited over a month for care from the university and I ended up having to pay out of pocket for counselling off campus. Without my network of supportive friends who drove me to and from my appointments I would never have been able to get the help I needed - even though I lived on campus. I can only imagine how someone in a "worse" situation would have felt in my shoes. I pay thousands of dollars to attend this school and you forgo investing in our mental health and instead build us new athletic facilities. Listen to our needs.

Action needs to be taken. I was pregnant in my 3rd year of undergrad and my husband and I are currently fourth years. The amount of trouble UW has made me go through is unbelievable. I was asked if my pregnancy was a temporary or permanent disability. I was also told to just give up, because "it wouldn't work out and "be too hard to manage". I wasn't allowed to get my schedule changed because my baby wasn't "a good enough reason".
