This is a petition specifically for Washoe County in NV, USA.

Any student in the Washoe County school system--specifically middle to high school--knows that there are three tiers of classes you can do; standard, honors, and AP. Most students take the easy route, standard with maybe a few honors classes sprinkled in. There are also students who go all out, taking all AP classes. AP classes are notoriously difficult, with large amounts of work and an unforgiving schedule. There are two kinds of AP students: those who can handle the workload, and those who have been pushed into it for one reason or another. The ones who have been pushed in, whether against their will or by some feat of a con, usually can't handle it. Asians (sorry for the stereotyping, but we all know it happens) get pushed into it by their parents, who vie for their success. Others are told they can handle the workload, and keep telling themselves so as they struggle to balance the homework, all but abandoning their social life while they try, in vain, to keep up with the demands of AP. They don't even get breaks; relentless homework overruns any chance for escape during fall, winter, and spring break.

This overbearing system is ruining the lives of our students, telling them they can handle it when they clearly cannot, causing them to withdraw into themselves further and push themselves to the very edge of sanity to try to appease the high-ups, feeling like failures at something they should be able to do and pushing themselves even further. The worst part? The school system lets them, feeding them copious amounts of homework with no regard for their physical or mental health. Students drop out, or even commit suicide, because they feel that if they cant handle something they were made to believe they could, easily, they are worthless. Dropouts find that they have lost many people in their paper haze, having unknowingly distanced themselves so far from them that they are all but alone; very few, if any, friends, and parents who are either worried sick about their mental health and social future, or who simply let their child distance themselves away.

This is a petition to lighten our AP students' workloads, for them to ease up a little. It would be better for those who can handle the normal workload to have it easy, rather than throwing those who can't under the bus and dragging them along behind it. Make things easier for those who have no choice but to do these classes, and maybe there would be fewer dropouts. Fewer suicides. Fewer children, with so much potential, who end up a self-blaming, mental mess who never graduated high school, and more students who can graduate and have lives ahead of themselves. Let them have breaks!! Lighten up on the demands!! Let these poor children live, rather than slowly dying inside as homework and the workload slowly consume their soul.
