Say NO to Warrington incinerator

SAY NO TO INCINERATION IN WARRINGTON The Energy from Waste proposal being put forward by Warrington Borough Council in their Waste Strategy consultation document is the incineration of waste and use of the energy released to provide electricity and heat to local users. Despite this sounding an efficient use of waste, there isn\'t an incineration technology that doesn\'t produce harmful emissions, and they produce more greenhouse gases than alternative treatments. Also, incineration is not as easy for councils as the industry likes to suggest. It is often very difficult to get planning permission for incinerators, as they often face intense local opposition. With the world shortage of oil and other resources it makes sense to recycle as much as possible from domestic waste. Some materials which are difficult to recycle now may well have been banned or taken out of use by 2020 or earlier (or been made recyclable by advances in technology) so the amount of waste needing to go to landfill may well be much less than at present. Rather than incinerating waste, Warrington Friends of the Earth prefer separate collection of food waste for treatment by composting or anaerobic digestion, and the remaining black bin waste to be treated by small scale Mechanical Biological Treatment to sort out any recyclables and biodegradables, with the final residue sent to landfill. By signing this petition, you are joining us is saying that you strongly disagree with the statement that \"Energy from Waste with combined heat and power is the best way for Warrington to deal with waste in the future and call on Warrington Borough council to oppose the use of incineration\".
