TO the Waterloo Region District School Board:

WHEREAS the Waterloo Region District School Board has recently set school boundaries such that all Chalmers Street Public School students will move on to the new Moffat Creek Public School for grades seven and eight, and,

WHEREAS many students, especially in the northwest corner of the Chalmers PS boundary area, will have to be bused to Moffat Creek PS, and,

WHEREAS many students, especially in the northwest corner of the Chalmers PS boundary area, actually live closer to Stewart Ave PS and fall well within the walking radius for that school, and,

WHEREAS at a time when childhood obesity is increasing and physical activity among children is decreasing, the WRDSB decision has the effect of removing an opportunity for physical activity, and,

WHEREAS walking to school is widely deemed preferable to the alternatives due to innumerable social and environmental benefits,

WE, the undersigned, petition the Waterloo Region District School Board as follows:

1) that the WRDSB to adjust the boundaries for Stewart Avenue PS and Moffat Creek PS to ensure that students who live within the walking radius of either school can attend that school, and,

2) that the WRDSB establish a Board policy stating that in future boundary reviews, students who are within a school's walking radius will be assigned to that school and not bused to a farther school
