I am an Equity Member in good standing and I am completely against this move. Actor's must be allowed to act -- to hone their craft, to show their work, etc... I agree that there are some specific circumstances where we should be paid, but, for the most part, Equity should leave things as they are until a better and more equitable plan can be devised.

This proposal from Equity is horrible. Frankly, it won't affect me. I produce non-union, but I still pay my actors. Hell, it might even hep me, since my audiences will be left with hundreds of less shows a year to see, but I'll stand alongside the people that it WILL affect, the larger theatre companies who are scraping by also, just at a higher level. If equity os going to make a change it should be to a tiered system tied to a production's budget. $70,000 budget? Yes, pay your actors minimum wage. $10,000 budget? The pay should stay at the present rate. I WAS about to start producing in Equity waiver for my shows, since I've done non-union productions for six years, but now I might just stay non-union. I have enough problems to deal with. My budget quadrupling? I don't think so. I'll hire non-union people if that's the case. They can be just as professional and just as talented.
