The school finally dropped the assignment requirement for all of us. I am relieved that they listened to our concerns about the lack of communication. Thank you for backing me up when it felt like we were being set up to fail.

When speaking with a group of peers about the requirements for the semester regarding convocation attendance for the NIU School of Music, it was brought to our attention with very short notice that we had a large scale assignment due regarding that of.

Normally, this assignment would not be a problem but considering we found out by chance with three days left to do a semesters worth of assignments, we feel that it is very unfair to have this expected of us to complete.

As a group of peers, we came to a consensus that we wanted to exercise our right to petition this assignment and requirement being asked of us because not once do any of us remember being told that these happenings were required of us, especially considering some students have other classes that meet during these convocations and others have jobs. Without even mentioning that we are not informed of these meetings until just a few days before.

It has been stated that the assignment was explained to us early on but it was not explained thoroughly in a way that majority of students understood.

I have been reading through all of your messages today and it is clear that so many of us are struggling under this unexpected burden. I am currently working to get a meeting with the department head so we can explain how impossible this tight deadline feels for everyone juggling work and extra classes.

Seeing this much support for our cause confirms that I am not alone in feeling blindsided by these unfair requirements. I am overwhelmed by how many of you stepped up to demand transparency from the school.

I agree this is unreasonable, unrealistic, and very stressful in an already uncertain time.

Was obviously not communicated effectively with students or in a meaningful way. Still hard to figure out the specifics of the assignment and what is expected from the “short detailed paragraph”

The school gave us no information about this long term assignment until 3 days before the due date. It is impossible to complete in this time frame, as it requires recalling specific details about dozens of performances.

I am signing this petition to support the students of this school as it is their right to speak up and get their voice heard. As teachers it is your duty to explain the assignments in a way that will make sure ALL students understand the work they have been assigned. It is unfair for all students to get an assignment that wasn't explained properly.
