The busy intersection where Toftrees Avenue crosses Beaumanor/President's Drive in the Village at Penn State necessitates a four-way Stop sign. The lack of stop signs for drivers on Toftrees Avenue makes this a dangerous intersection for bikers, joggers, pedestrians and drivers. Residents of Collegiate Station must cross Toftrees Avenue to President's Drive in order to visit the Village at Penn State Community Center. Since mailboxes are located in the Community Center, this is a daily trip. Due to the curvature of Toftrees Avenue, pedestrians cannot see oncoming cars approaching the intersection from the south until they are already halfway across the street and in the direct path of oncoming vehicles. Drivers coming up Toftrees Avenue from Fox Hollow Road tend to drive at speeds in excess of the posted 35mph. While these vehicles are clearly visible to pedestrians, their speed of travel makes it very difficult to safely cross the street on foot during peak traffic times. As a result, there are frequent near-misses. Thankfully, and incredibly, there have been no serious injuries to date. Since the Village at Penn State was built to create a walkable environment (sidewalks throughout, walking trails, etc), and since Collegiate Station residents have a daily need to safely access the Community Center, we believe that additional stop signs for north/south traffic on Toftrees Avenue are absolutely necessary. Additional stop signs at this busy intersection would make all vehicles stop and check for cross traffic and pedestrians. It would not unduly hinder traffic travelling on Toftrees Avenue. It would require all traffic to slow down, and stop in an area where pedestrians and pet walkers abound, and limited visibility to the south is problematic. This petition will be presented to the Patton Township authorities in November 2012. Please sign and pass along to other residents of the Village at Penn State. If any of you would like to write a letter sharing your thoughts, please feel free to do so. These will be presented to the town as well. They can be mailed to Robert C.
