Od 15 listopada 2010 roku w Centrum Przeciw Ekstremizmowi w Sankt-Petersburgu przebywają dwaj artyści z grupy „Voina” - Oleg Vorotnikov i Leonid Nikolaev. Postawiono im zarzuty na podstawie art 213.1 b rosyjskiego kodeksu karnego – o chuligaństwo motywowane nienawiścią do określonej grupy.

Artyści z grupy „Voina” od wielu lat występują przeciw autorytaryzmowi, cenzurze i oligarchii.

Zarzuty postawione artystom z „Voiny” są nieadekwatne do ich czynów i stanowią formę nadużywania władzy w celu tłumienia wolności artystycznej i obywatelskiej. Vorotnikov i Nikolaev przeciwstawiali się oligarchom i cenzurze, kontynuowali tradycje rosyjskich awangard i postępowych ruchów społecznych i z pewnością nie zasługują na ograniczenie wolności oraz oskarżenia o ekstremizm i działania motywowane nienawiścią. Choć w ich obronie wystąpił brytyjski artysta Banksy, deklarując chęć wpłacenia 80 000 funtów kaucji za ich wypuszczenie, nadal przebywają w więzieniu. Pozostająca na wolności członkini grupy została pozbawiona dokumentów, telefonu i komputera, co uniemożliwia jej i Kacprowi – jej dwuletniemu dziecku – korzystanie z opieki medycznej i przemieszczanie się. W większości krajów w takich przypadkach sądy sięgają po najwyżej kodeks wykroczeń, tu uruchomiony został kodeks karny, a artyści spędzili już 3 miesiące w więzieniu.

Domagamy się niezwłocznego wypuszczenia artystów Vorotnikova i Nikolaeva z więzienia, bezstronnego i sprawiedliwego procesu oraz odstąpienia od stosowania cenzorskich praktyk wobec nich i innych artystów w Rosji. Przypadek „Voiny” nie jest odosobniony, w Rosji coraz częściej mają miejsce ograniczenia wolności twórczej artystów, kuratorów i galerii, zakończone procesami karnymi i wysokimi grzywnami. Jako przeciwnicy ograniczania wolności artystycznych i cenzury, żądamy zaprzestania szykan wobec rosyjskich twórców.

Terror władzy nie zastąpi demokracji.

Free the artists from „"Voina"” group.

On November the 15, 2010 two members of the art collective “"Voina"”, Oleg Vorotnikov and Leonid Nikolaev, have been arrested in Moscow, Russia, and since then they are in custody in the Anti-extremism Centre in Saint-Petersburg. The charges they are facing are on the basis of Article 213.1 Paragraph b of the Russian Federation Criminal Code - criminal mischief motivated by hatred or hostility toward a social group.

The art group "Voina" has been actively opposing against authoritarianism, censorship and oligarchy for many years.

The allegations against the artists of "Voina" are inadequate to their acts and are being used to abuse power in order to suppress artistic and civil freedoms. Vorotnikov and Nikolaev who have protested against oligarchs and censorship, were continuing the traditions of the Russian avant-gardes and progressive social movements. They certainly do not deserve restrictions of freedom or charges of extremism and mischief motivated by hatred. Although the British artist Banksy declared to pay a £80,000 bail in order to release the Russian artists from custody, they still are in prison. Koza - another member of the "Voina" group, who until now remains free – was dispossessed of her ID, phone and computer and is thus unable to receive healthcare together with her 2 year old son Kasper.

While in most countries petty offences code would be used in such cases, in this suit the criminal code has been enforced and the artists have spent already three months in prison.

We demand the immediate release of Vorotnikov and Nikolaev from detention and we call for an unbiased and fair trail. We demand that the Russian authorities stop censoring artists. The affair of "Voina" is not an isolated one; recently other cases of similar abuse have been reported. As opponents of censorship and any restrictions of artistic freedom, we demand an end to the persecution of the artists from the “"Voina"” group.

Democracy should not be mistaken with the terror of power.
