The G.I. Bill, formerly known as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act signed in 1944, is a federal program designed to provide special benefits to our country’s veterans. Amongst the many services it offers, one of them is scholarship money giving soldiers the opportunity to return to school and get a college or vocational degree. However, there are conditions to receiving the scholarship money some of which have posed difficulties for veterans in the Florida College System. The Post 9/11 G.I. Bill will pay all resident tuition and fees for a public school, the higher amount of the actual tuition and fees or $17,500 per academic year for a private school. A veteran’s actual tuition and fees costs may exceed these amounts if they are attending a private school or are attending a public school as a non-resident student. Many veterans have expressed their concern about the fact that Florida colleges charge out-of-state fees to those veterans that have established residency elsewhere yet choose to return to study in the state. Although normally this would not be a problem, it has caused financial hardships on many families because of the exorbitant cost of attendance for out-of-state students which the G.I. Bill does not cover. FCSSGA is a strong supporter of veteran rights and therefore we believe that veteran’s should be able to attend college in the state of Florida at the lowest cost even if they are not necessarily in-state residents.
