I am looking for new internet options, as my old DSL service is no longer adequate. There seems to be a complete monopoly by Cablevision/Optimumonline

Cable should not be allowed to have a monopoly. In my case they raised their price by $45 / month for the same services and since there are very few options in the market they know they can get away with it. An i have cable for 10 years now!! Every year the prices goes higher and higher.
This has to stop. If they want to have a monopoly then there should be some control over the price. There is no reason on earth to have an increase in price for the same services year after year. Stop this immediately, either allow Verizon and other providers to enter the market or control the prices. If cable is able to give somebody 3-play for less than $100/month for 1 year as a "promotion" then there is no reason for the price to increase after that for the same services.
