I detest the administration's efforts to downgrade at the expense of students and especially university clubs. I do not support any form of downgrading for the department or the undergraduate association of students.
Verbatim was my connection to the academic world as an undergraduate student--I sat on the executive for three years, was a student representative for departmental meetings, and even became club president in my final year of study before pursuing my MSc. Verbatim’s office space was literally my home away from home. Many of my fellow “verbatimites” felt the same way, and I can attribute both the existence of my social life and much of my academic success in those years to the space that cultivated these results. The Verbatim office is more than just a place for club executives to hold meetings—it has become the single social hub of the linguistics undergraduate student body. It is where students can always meet for help, collaboration, input, discussion, much-needed study breaks, and a chance to talk with other students who share similar interests. The office space held by Verbatim provided a backdrop for many of the discussions that led and guided my path towards my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist, as I was able to connect with many upper-year students in a similar situation to what I hoped to pursue. In short, Verbatim needs a space for students to do what they have been doing since the formation of this organization. If Verbatim is removed from the proximity of linguistics students and faculty, and is instead clumped in with other student organizations, this threatens to undo much of the potential for social and academic success that Verbatim has provided for its many students.

I feel like there's a lot more to be lost than just office space. There would be quite a different environment if there were no Verbatim office, which would sorely be missed.

Verbatim is the reason I've been successful in linguistics - it was my first stop after the undergraduate advisor's office when I was a new student here, and after two other degrees, I still continue to be an active member - the loss of Verbatim would be close to a death stroke for our programme.

As a transfer student I was very excited to discover that there was a linguistics club, and if I hadn't joined Verbatim and also became an exec I would have felt very disconnected from the rest of the community (although I'd hardly say a community would even exist in such a case). To lose our club space would be a huge loss considering the amount of people that use the space, how often they use it, and the resources that are available within the office.

I was part of several clubs at UCalgary. Verbatim is, without question, the one that made the best use of its resources, delivered the most value to its members, and did the most to promote and further its discipline. Verbatim might very well be the best organization I have ever had the honour to be a part of, and it deserves every ounce of support the new department can provide.
