The Valley AeroSpace Team (VAST), a hobby rocketry club located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, has filed an appeal with the Circuit Court for the Special Use Permit (SUP)denial by the Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA)on September 3rd, 2009.
According to the Zoning Administrator, VAST's activities, whichhad beenconducted for 14 months in the middle of a 500 acre farm field located in Swoope, Virginia,were considered active recreation andper the Zoning Ordinance,anSUPwould be required to continue. VAST applied for the permitbutthe request was subsequently denied by the BZA.
As the next stepunder the Virginia Code of Law, VAST retained an attorney and filed an appeal tothe Board's decision with the Court basing iton the grounds that the BZA's decision was arbitrary and capricious and a clear violationof the zoning standards and principles they are tasked with following.
We, the undersigned, wholly support the hobby rocketry activities conducted by the Valley AeroSpace Team at the Croft property located in Swoope, Virginia.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the momentum this is gathering. Seeing the support for our rocketry club makes me realize how many people value this space as much as I do. This progress belongs entirely to all of you who stepped up to show your backing.

so stupid to deny this permit. its just a hobby club not a business or anything crazy. let them launch their rockets.
My son loves these launches. It is completely safe and happens in the middle of nowhere so I dont see what the problem is.
I have gone to a few launches at the croft property and everyone is super responsible. Safe and educational hobby. Needs to stay open.
The board is overstepping. Its a farm field for crying out loud. STOP PICKING ON THIS CLUB.
This is ridiculous. Rocketry is a great way to get kids interested in science and math. Let them fly in the field.

Having been a participant in model rocketry for the past 3 years I can verify that it is a safe, enjoyable and educational hobby when properly conducted.
