I learned a great deal from Professor VanWassenhove. I learned how to think for myself, I learned how to fight to have my voice heard in a classroom of loud men. Through his Socratic teaching style, I absorbed the material organically, in a way that sticks with you long after finals week. I am saddened by his sudden departure from the department. I can not help but believe it is due to his belief in the Austrian school of economic thought. It is irresponsible of UH to let him go. Providing more than one view is important in any institution. When we seek to build an institution with one voice, we lose the beauty of higher education. I have not yet decided what type of economist I will be, I am still forming my philosophy, still developing my toolbox, but I should receive instruction in not just one side of the debate. This is a debate, there is no definitive proof of one school of thought over the other. My two favorite teachers were on polar opposite sides of the debate, and that thrilled me. Without a front row seat to two opposing views, my education would be lopsided and one dimensional. As a student it reminded me of the importance in the dissenting voice.

Professor van Wassenhove is honestly the most engaging and knowledgeable professor I have encountered during my time at UH. He responds very well to questions posed in class, catering to the class dynamic rather than simply running through the material to keep to a schedule. He is one of my favorite three professors of all time, here or at any other institution.
