VA Recoupment of Disable Veterans SSB/VSI Payments

Recoupment took place without letting me know or why. As it appears, Finance stopped my VSI a long time ago, i was to receive 28 vsi payments, i probably got 6 give or take. Now i'm retired and 100 % disabled , i paid back thru my retirement check $99,999.99 and felt ok and good with that.. now, they go and throw another $99,999,99 again. i figured i If they are going to do this from now until i'm dead , (Parkinson's for last 18 years) then they should have sent me my VSI checks for all those years , since they say I received most of it, i did not and require an audit be done.

I was told last summer that the VA is going to "recoup" my SSB that I was given too get me to get out of the Navy, I too had to be immediately enlisted in the Navy reserves for 3 years, I had to make myself available if something happened during those 3 years. I too was in the understanding that the SSB was so that the Navy could break my enlistment contract early, that is exactly what the government calls it, an enlistment "CONTRACT". Now I know if I had decided to break my contract, that they would not have been to pleased with me and I probably would have wound up in jail. So why isn't any of them in jail for breaking my contract and then trying to take back what was given to me as payment for the. time that they took away from me. I too received the SSB in October 1992, under the guise as a contractual buyout. Entered into the ANG and later did qualify for retirement. I disagree with how the VA and DFAS have handled this. The VA recouped the net amount then DFAS recouped the taxes over again that i paid up front, so I have been taxed twice on money that I basically did not receive , I have paid back more than I initially received, how is that possible? Crooked politicians need to live by the same laws that they impose on us!

I had to pay back my ssb also. I was discharged in 1992, at that time a va rep at my separation was told I knew I would be rated by va, he told me This would not affect ssb. If I knew this I would have never gotten out. According to my evaluations I was an excellent sailor and my command meritorious advanced me to E-6 eight months prior. My point is I was a good sailor and my career was set at that time.. They lied to me so I wouldn’t change my mind. I was awarded 30% 3 months after separation & I am currently 100% chapter 35 permanent and total. This law has to change!!!

I spent over 16 years in, they were drawing down my rate, RM, I was an E-7, Got SSB of approx 58,000.00 and years later was awarded 10% disability for hearing loss while on flight deck, but before I could start receiving my disability payments, they kept my 10% until it was paid off. so I got discharged and downsized for no money at all. UNsat!

I also had to pay back my SSB payments before collecting disability pay. This also was during a hardship period in my life.

Given a bonus to leave Navy as part of a drawdown. Was not given option to OPT out of SBI. Was not given any info that SBI would have to be paid back if I qualified for VA disability at a later time. How could this be legal?

Feel like the government is ripping people of by giving them a Bonus to volunteering to get out and then taking it back if you receive any disability

Due to drawdowns in military of no fault of my own I volunteered to separate from Marine Corps SSB/VDERP. Due to Mos was closed for promotions during possibly the remaining time of my contract. I served 12 years 6 months no guarantees of promotion. I couldn't take the risk of being forced out at a later date with no separation incentive at a later date with a family I am the sole provider for. Now 29 years later I am forced to pay back disability payments I began to receive in 2021.

This just happened to me too! I can’t believe it. I thought they would only do this if I retired from the military. Not sure how I’ll make it now.

Now the Biden administration wants to give illegal immigrants like $450,000 because they were separated etc., this would cost trillions, but they do not have the approximately $480million it would take to get rid of the law that recoups SSB, and take care of the veterans. This is what we fought for???????

This was an incentive. Not pay. Recoupment should be stopped.
