The Military did not tell us that if we filed for VA disability that we would have to pay back our SSB/VSI payments. This is not right and someone should listen to us. Thank you

It has taken the VA 21 years to start recouping my ssb payments. Please note that I have been receiving disability pay since 1993, but as soon as I received a 100% rating and added my third wife in 21 years, now they decide to recoup the incentive. There should definitely be a statute of limitation on this action.

I am having to go through the same thing. I did not get the choice to stay in the army I got put out because of budget cuts. And now I am completely disabled and the VA wants me to live without a pension check until my VSI/SSB of 37000 is paid back in full. They want me to live years without a check until this is paid in full. No one can live without money. I am not able to work so how am I suppose to make it without my check? The VA needs to make payment arrangements for thoses who got coned into this debt owing program. It was suppose to been for time served not a debt to collect later when I am no longer able to work to pay it. And I asked them how is a disabled veteran suppose to live and take care of his family without a check that I well deserve for serving my country.

I am so infavor for this petition. After losing my job and becoming homeless due to my disability, I was able to get into the homeless Domiciliary treatment program at the local VA. The program temporarily gives 100% disability while being housed. After being in the program, I learned that my SSB was being recouped while I was living there. This caused a severe impact on my wellness position. I had to leave the treatment program and returned to work because I had no pay check and no temporary VA benefits due to the SSB recoupment.

This is B.S. They just took mine! Waited 13 months for my claim to get approved 100% total and permanent. Was expecting a big payday, and boom! $38,000 gone. This has got to stop!

I just stumbled upon this and had no idea it even existed! I too like everyone else here is under the SSB program, however I along with others in my separations group wasn't informed that we'd have to repay the benefit prior to receiving disability compensation. I even had friends from the same unit that was under this program but DID receive their compensation. Something is broken with this system!

I too am in the exact same boat. I do not believe our disability pay should be taken to pay back SSB. Civilians who, say were bought out by the government for living in a flood zone like New Orleans- only to have to pay it back before receiving their Social Security Disability? What is the difference?

Long story short. 13 years active duty. Took SSB in 1993, 60,000 dollars, 40 something after taxes. Required to do 3 years reserve, recruited by active reserves, joined active reserves 1995. In 1998 Presidential recall one year Bosnia. In 2002 Presidential recall one year Bahrain. Zero disability, completly healthy. Retired 2003 after more than 15 years active duty and 20 years total service. I will turn 60 in 8 years and do not look forward to paying back 60,000 dollars. I am a school teacher so I already live on very little money, and because I am so healthy VA disability is not an option. My service in multiple wars apparently means nothing to the Federal Government or an ungrateful nation.

My EAS was Sept 2, 2013. I am rated at 50% PTSD, 20% nerve damage, 10% joint degeneration, 30% irritable bowl syndrome, 10% tinnitus. I could have gotten out on a med board, but was told it would be double dipping once I got my VA percentage and would have to pay it back. The option to take Voluntary Separation Pay which was for my time served would not be considered double dipping only if I came back in to retire, then I would have to pay it back in full. The waiver I signed specified just that, never mentioned anything about the VA recouping as well. I am fighting this because it does not explain why the VA a medical benefits department feels the need to collect a Payment that had nothing to do with medical. The Marine Corps paid me to leave the Corps, not for any of my injuries. The VA is paying me for my injuries not for the time served. I am currently looking at having to pay back over $105K.
