Growing up in a poor family, this is a huge opportunity to raise awareness on how best to address this problem.

I think it's important to give people the opportunity to understand what roles poverty and inequality play in our society, especially in an era of increasing socioeconomic inequality

UW is a beacon of pride and privilege in Washington State and has led the way in many research and social justice frontiers. Creating this program would not only help students coming from disadvantaged socio-economic situations to feel heard and validated in their concerns and pursuit of higher education, but it also might serve to break down the barriers for more privileged individuals to understand the realities of inequity and the systematic barriers that create this imbalance.

I'm surprised we don't have a program for students able to invest in studying poverty and inequality already! This is a really great idea for a program!

I think this is a critically important step in a good direction for us.

This step is essential for the UW to demonstrate its commitment to an organized way of learning about poverty. Those communities that are most affected by poverty should be represented in the faculty and staff of this minor.

We greatly need this in our society. With the great inequality and homelessness in Seattle, we should take these issues head on.

For those of you interested, there is a GEOG 342 "Geography of Inequality" course this upcoming Spring 2017. I am excited to take it! I'd probably cry tears of joy if I had the opportunity to graduate with this minor at the end of Spring 2018!
