The change in health insurance coverage is causing major hardships to many UT graduate students. Their precarious financial bottom line is a result not only of their low stipends in relation to the Austin cost of living, but of their health insurance benefits. UT used to provide better grad health benefits and we should go back to doing that.

When our prospective graduates came this year, all of us struggled to really encourage them to choose UT. Our program is excellent, the people are excellent. But they're committing to years of making far below poverty levels and taking extra jobs just to get decent healthcare or enough money for rent.

If I’m struggling as a supervisor with my salary in this city, I am more than certain the graduate students who make the University what it is are struggling financially.

UT is becoming something of a laughingstock among R1 universities for this very reason. Many of my department's most promising graduate applicants have regretfully declined our offers because (and *only* because) we pay poverty wages. How is it that UT didn't tackle this problem long ago? It's an own goal.
