Auditioning for the university bands leads to a tradition of excellence at the University of Southern Mississippi. Playing in the concert ensembles provides student musicians with a sense of community involvement and many educational opportunities. The saxophone studio at the University of Southern Mississippi only auditions once a year for the university ensembles, while many other studios audition twice per year: once for fall ensemble placement and again for spring ensemble placement. Generally speaking, most student musicians get better as the year goes on, therefore making the second audition more competitive. Many students in the school of music at USM strive to be in the top ensemble, and most of those students get to audition again if their fall audition does not go as planned. However, this is not the case for the saxophone studio. As aspiring musicians and educators wanting equal opportunities, we are coming together to request that the saxophone studio at the University of Southern Mississippi hold an audition for spring ensemble placement in addition to the initial fall ensemble placement audition.
