Use City Surplus Properties for Self Managed Houseless Villages

I was homeless for 3 years in a minivan with my sister and our two emotional assistance cats until we moved into an apartment last October where I could use my Section 8 voucher. I would love Tiny Houses for me and my unhoused friends in Santa Cruz, California, if the City here would allow it. I support you!

552,830 homeless people in this country. Continuing to do the same things is NOT going to fix the problem.

This is a great idea and I support the vision. Let's help our friends and neighbors stabilize there lives so they can access the healing resources our visionary city is so proud of.

For fuks sake City of Portland , pull your head out. Let these fine people show you how a bit of self determination can totally fix our “state of emergency.”

Houseless people taking this kind of initiative should be supported. I'm not actually part of the St John's Houseless Community but support this. The current forms of houselessness began right around when I first came to Portland in 1977, with beginnings of downtown gentrification & closure of SRO hotels plus mental health de-institutionalization without adequate social support. Continued use of the same "strategies" have shifted the goal from ending houselessness to "managing" it, and houseless persons, with paternalism at best and criminalization & abuse at worst. Time for something different. Here are some houseless folks leading, I support that!

No one should freeze to death in the shadow of an empty building.

The city should also look into using business properties in Kenton, Arbor Lodge, etc. Currently there is a drug store that is sitting empty on Denver and Lombard and other buildings in the area that could help house people with no shelter.

The city should help those who are victimized by homeless intead of punishing them by sending brutal police in to attack them and steal their belongings.

Please.

Provide real opportunities for St. John’s homeless folkks!
